Nonostante che nella minoranza esigua della popolazione ci fosse una comunanza storica e culturale verso un passato che il processo risorgimentale stava ricostruendo e ancor di più usando come mito dopo le guerre di indipendenza, la penisola italica era peculiare agli occhi altrui per la disorganizzazione e la parcellizzazione delle esigenze e delle rivendicazioni, e per un analfabetismo endemico, se rapportato alle nazioni del nord, e per una povertà spaventosa, da rasentare condizioni di servitù quasi medievali.

La vita di Camillo Benso conte di Cavour è una sonda che svela tratti di noi italici ancor oggi attuali.
